Our village of Sachsen had a Church Anniversary Festival 8/17/12 and we got to see the new "Maypole" go up:) The Bavarian traditions of the many wine/beer/Easter/Christmas festivals are wonderful to see...and now we know how the Maypoles in the many small villages are erected:) A tractor with the help of the village teens escorted the tree through Sachsen.... they stopped at the local Trinken shop to get beer, the local Metzgerei to get a meat sandwich... and then on to the area where the tree will stand for the year. The young people use traditional poles to lever the tree upright.... and then to the beer tent to celebrate:) Many of these trees do go up on May first while others go up during the village Kirchweih Fest..... how fun to be a part of our village traditions!
