BERCHTESGADEN 8/6/12

We drove to Berchtsgaden on the autobahn with much of Germany... as it was the start of Bavaria's holiday break:) So on the return trip home we mainly drove the 2 lane roads. When we arrived in this small valley near Salzburg, the cloud level was low and covered the mountain peaks. Thus, when we went up to the Eagle's Nest which was Hitler's retreat, we didn't get to see the view but did enjoy the beer:) Once back in the village of Berchtsgaden we found a beer fest.... and we saw more people in the traditional Lederhosen/Drindel clothing than ever. It rained in the afternoon, but what a wonderful surprise to have the clouds finally leave and there were the alps.... we had forgotten this area was so beautiful! The next morning we drove to the Konigsee which was still covered with early morning mist. We didn't have time to take the boat tour to St. Bartholamay chapel... next time:)But we did take the Salt Mine tour and so enjoyed the train, boat, slide rides. The history of mining "white gold" since 1517 and seeing large salt crystals used as lamps was so very interesting! We definitely will be returning to Berchtesgaden:)
