GIBRALTAR:)

May 24th was spent in "Gib" as Gibraltar is called by the local British residents. We spent the nite on the Spanish side and walked across the border for the day. On our way into town we actually walked across the British airstrip that closes a few times a day for planes to land:) The Rock is an amazing view that dominates the horizon as seen from our hotel room. On top of the Rock you can see the mountains of Morocco/Africa only 15 miles away. The rock of Gibraltar and the rock of the African mountains is exactly the same so they were joined at one time. On the tour of the Rock we saw the famous apes and even a newborn... so cute, but don't touch them though they can touch you:)!! The Rock has natural caverns as shown in the picture of St. Michaels Cave with stalagmites and stalactites. It was thought to be the entrance to the Gates of Hades in ancient times. The British also blasted out "Siege Tunnels" beginning in 1779 during the Spanish and French siege and adding 30 more miles during WWII with guns aimed for defense! Though they drive on the right, not the left, Gibraltar is very British with the banners celebrating the Queen's jubilee, red phone booths, English style churches, bookstores and restaurants. We enjoyed it all!
