SCHONENBERG

We had a great time in the Ellwangen area and continued to enjoy the surprise of discovery. The top right picture was an old home on the walking street of Ellwangen. It was completely covered with traditional German paintings and is now a pharmacy. Across from the Schloss Ellwangen we could see the large church complex of the picture on the left... so we had to go investigate:) It was Schonenberg. Like so many churches in our area, the outside looks plain and understated, but the inside is an amazing sight of Bavarian Rococo. The church is filled with stucco ornamentation, gilded work, vivid frescoes on the ceiling, a magnificant alter and wood carvings.

And this area is not even mentioned in our Michelin guide book....
