More Rome

One of the most important sights in Rome, of course, is St Peters..official and historical heart of the Roman Catholic Church. And it is truely worthy of the title....beautiful, impressive, awe inspiring and wonderfully historic. From every aspect it is something to behold...From the outside it is HUGE and breathtaking....and as you enter you see the works of art and history...to the right is the Pieta, by Michael Angelo when he was 27, and above the huge dome of St Peter's with the Bernini alter canopy...seven stories high and the dome itself, huge and beautiful with the light streaming through..and think of this being built in the 1500's (Michael Angelo was in his 70's when he designed and built the dome). Then there is the fabulous Vatican Museum with every historic relic you can imagine..the photo above of the Hall of Maps with the gold ceiling. Even statues and relics from 3500BC!
