BURGHAUSEN:)

Burghausen is right on the border with Austria and has a well preserved old town crowned by the longest hilltop fortress in Germany (1000 meters). It was first built in the 1200's and added to for the next three centuries by the dukes of Bavaria. Now it sports an elongated castle on a rocky outcropping with several "coutyard castles" and bridges that separate them. The little town below is on the river Salzach that separates Germany from Austria and is quaint and colorful. We were there after a two and a half hour drive on Sunday morning, so most of the town shops were closed. Even so, it was interesting and historic. We got to go inside and look at the old artworks from the period. Then we were off to Munich for the night...a drive of about one hour or so.
