RICHARD THE LION HEARTED:)

This is the famous Hohenberg castle near the village of Trifels, way up on top of a little mountain just west of the vinyards out there on the flatlands.....you can see our car as we approached it, already up near the top and at the end of a small winding road. It is built on the top of a rock outcroping that forms the base and much of the structure of the castle itself. The photo to the right gives you the impression of the day and the place....lost in the fog and clouds. (and we had to walk up from the parking lot way down there in the fog) History abounds...in 1193, Richard the Lionheart was "imprisoned" here after being captured on his way back from the Crusades. He was released after England paid the ransom that was demanded....and the rest is history. It was interesting to be able to roam around in the castle, top to bottom and actually see where his room was. Down the mountain and off to Karlsruhe and back home by dinner time. It is so great that things are not that far apart in this wonderful place.
