ELLWANGEN

It is so much fun to go a town that is highlighted in yellow on our map which means there are historical sights. Dale picked Ellwangen and it was not even written up in our Michelin tour book. As we enter the town that is north of Ulm, we look to our right and see the Schloss Ellwangen on the top of the hill. As we get closer there are LOTS of cars and we notice white tents.... is there a wine festival?? It turned out to be a wonderful medieval festival! People were all dressed in costumes from archers to monks, tradespeople to knights:) Many people were staying in tents both outside and inside the Schloss and living as they would have in medieval times: wood fires, hauling water, rough wood furniture etc. Inside the Schloss were many stalls of people making (and selling) handmade baskets, shoes, metalwork, bows and arrows, pottery, ropes, weapons, etc. They were also presenting plays of executions/ torture, the use of falcons for hunting, and even the first bowling game:) Ellwangen was only 40 minutes from our home and a very special place.... but even more so with a medieval Festival to enjoy!!!
