BRUGGE, BELGIUM 3/16/13
We are always amazed how each country in Europe manages to be different from each other in food, language and landscape. The land got flatter as we left Germany and the buildings were mostly brick. Brugge (Bruges) has to be one of the most picturesque, quaint towns with a maze of narrow streets, canals and lovely architecture. We certainly got the feeling of how close it is to France and the Netherlands, but it also keeps it's uniqueness and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. In spite of it being rainy, windy and cold, we enjoyed walking the streets and happening on the windmills and canals. For a good reason, Brugge is called the Venice of the North. We "had" to tour the Friet Museum to learn the history of the making of Pomme Frites/ French Fries... which originated in Belgium, not France... and of course, to sample some fries:) Dinner was mussels..... over 35 years ago Dale and I traveled with my brother Harold in my parents red VW bug (they were living in Wiesbaden:) to Brussels. We always remember the delicious mussels we had in Brussels on that trip and now duplicated the "mussel adventure" in Brugge!
