MOSEL 1

The Mosel river flows from France through Trier and north to Koblentz where it joins the Rhein River. Our trip started just north of Trier and followed the wonderful and historic Mosel through the famous wine growing valleys of Germany. We spent the first night in Kaiserslautern so as to get a morning start down the river road. The first photo is taken in Bernkastel, considered "the pearl" of the Mosel. We hit it on Sunday of the huge wine festival and the photo is of the castle that overlooks the town..you can see the river below. The second photo is taken in the town with all of the celebrating people..wine even for breakfast and lunch on this day. The river weaves continuously back and forth as it flows northward....every few kilometers is another quaint town, and the frequent castle..weather was perfect and temperature was very comfortable. One very special castle was Burg Eltz, the third photo. Currently under reconstruction, but extremely well preserved even now, it was filled with old weapons, tools, furniture,and collectable treasures, much there since before Columbus discovered America. It even had indoor toilets and a wonderful heating system, which were uniquely modern back then...original floors and timbers in the Castle were over 500 years old. What a wonderful place that we had never heard of before this...we spent the night in Beilstein (next blog)
