Nuremberg Underground

We drove into Nuremberg Sunday morning and went to the "underground tour". It is interesting that there are numerous tunnels and chambers beneath the old part of the city. Originally these underground areas were built to help in the manufacturing of German Beer. The fermentation process needs cool temperatures that are stable, so this allowed the Germans to brew beer year around. There are two and three levels of underground "caves" that were originally cut and dug into the subterranean rock 300 to 500 years ago....during the second world war these chambers served as air raid shelters and although the city was vitually leveled in early 1945, most of the population was spared. It was very interesting that they developed this beer-making industry so long ago and that the underground chambers were so sophisticated in temperature, air circulation and access (shafts, tunnels, elevators etc). It was a nice Sunday outing...we were back home well before dinner. It is now Thanksgiving week...we leave for Malta on Wednesday morning.
