SPLIT, CROATIA

We spent a few days in Split, on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is the second largest city in Croatia, after Zagreb. More well known would likely be Dubrovnik, further down the coast and more the tourist site. We chose this trip to see the retirement palace of Diocletian, emperor of Rome, 284 AD. It still stands on the Riva, or promenade along the waterfront in Split, and has parts of it in original repair. Other parts are replaced, added to or gone. The first photo is of the bay of Split, with the Riva to the left and the old palace at the far end. The original arched "windows" can be seen along the front on the second story. The second photo is a closer view and the third is part of the ruins in the center area. The cellars were rediscovered only in the last century and even now are still being excavated. All in all it was interesting and amazing in its preservation after so many years.
