AUDI MUSEUM in INGOLSTADT

Our trip to Ingolstadt was actually to see the Audi Museum. That is a picture of it to the left. I am not sure how new it is, but I believe it is not very old. It is surrounded by the Audi factory, where all of the cars are built and the whole complex is quite impressive. It was a little over an hour by Autobahn from our home, and about halfway to Munich. There is a lot of automotive history here, with Audi being the result of the coming together of four different companies, the most recognizable of which is Auto Union with their great racing history in the '30s. We also saw a lot of the early concept cars from Audi, including the all aluminum A8, intoduced in the 90's. Included also is a photo of a 1961 DKW (another of the four car companies). This was very similar to the car I learned to drive in when I was in my teens and the family was stationed in Germany (my four years of high school)Ours was slightly older and much more yellow, but it still looked just like this gray one...four on the column, front wheel drive, two cycle engine, suicide doors etc...and an engine with only 7 moving parts (it didn't purr, it went ring-a-ding-ding)...there were old cars like the Wanderer, and the Horsch... bigger, fancier mercedes type autos, limited in production and not for the everyday driver...we saw race cars, all sorts of concepts and newer editions too... more on that in the next blog.
